Active Release Techniques® - A Unique Massage Technique

Active Release Techniques® (ART®) is a type of massage technique that treats muscle, tendon, ligament, fascia, and nerve problems. ART is a patented soft tissue system/movement massage that has helped relieve quickly and permanently:

  • Headaches
  • Back pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Shin splints
  • Shoulder pain
  • Sciatica
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Knee problems
  • Tennis elbow

These conditions are all often a result of overused muscles.

How Do Overuse Conditions Occur?

When muscles and other soft tissues are overused, three changes may occur:

  • Pulls, tears, collisions, and other acute conditions
  • Micro-trauma or accumulation of small tears
  • Not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia)

These conditions can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue to the affected area. Scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that are meant to move freely causing muscles to become shorter and weaker. Other issues include tendonitis and trapped nerves. As a result, your range of motion is reduced, you lose strength, and pain is caused. Tingling, numbness, and weakness are also caused by trapped nerves.

What Is an ART Treatment Like?

An ART session consists of an examination and treatment. Using their hands, your ART provider evaluates the texture, tightness, and movement of nerves, ligaments, tendons, fascia, and muscles. Abnormal tissues are treated with a combination of precisely directed tension with specific movements made by the patient.

There are over 500 specific movements or treatment protocols unique to ART. This is not a “cookie-cutter” approach; ART providers identify and correct specific problems that are affecting you individually.

At Gdanski & Tallon Chiropractic Centre in London, Dr. Tallon has been providing ART since 2003 and is one of the few doctors to have his Masters level certification in Southwestern Ontario.
